The water dripping from the cavern ceiling seemed to hold some type of rhythm to it.
Drip. Drip, Drip
Drip. Drip.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
Drip.
Over and over again did these little droplets of water fall. Hmm, she’s running a little late today it seems I thought. Usually by now I would have seen her. She would have snuffed out all of the light around and left me in complete darkness. Only then to reveal a small light from her lantern. As if she was beckoning me towards a real salvation, but that’s not true at all. The light would only lead you towards where you entered and would close the entrance. I’ve learned that the hard way.
However due to my persistence it seems she has had to change her course of action as of late. Showing horrors beyond mortal conception. Attempting to charm me with material goods or other unsavory, or well, savory things. But although all of these things have not only scarred and tricked my mind, I can’t give up now. I’ve come so far, so why not wait a bit longer?
Drip. Drip. Drip
Drip. Drip.
Drip.
“Peculiar isn’t it” said a soft whispering voice.
“What is?” I asked. I looked around my surroundings to see if I could locate the source of the voice, but nothing around seemed to show any signs of life.
“The water droplets of course”, the voice said playfully, “It’s as if they’re playing music for you.”
“I highly doubt it. I believe they’d more likely play music for you than someone like me.”
“For as long as I have been here, they have never once behaved this way around me or anyone else. I suppose your persistent presence is starting to have an effect around here.”
“Maybe the cave is starting to warm up to me…or maybe you my dear Guardian.”
“Preposterous!”, the voice exclaimed, “Why would I do that towards a lowly mortal such as yourself!”
“That is a good question my dear, why would you?”
There was silence. Not even the water droplets seemed to want to continue their song.
“You know it’s rude not to show yourself when speaking to someone”, I said calmly, “It’s not like I’m going to harm you.”
A small sigh echoed through the cavern. Soon after the shuffling of footsteps came after.
First the light of the lantern appeared around the corner. A warm and welcoming light, even if its purpose was only intended to lead people away. Next came the silver gleam of the silver blade of the scythe. Not once has she harmed me with this weapon, however there have been a few close calls though. Then the wispy black ethereal robe appeared next. Although looking at it from this close it seemed to sparkle like the stars in the midnight sky.
She stood a little distance away from me. Cautious as ever it seems I thought. However I did not move from where I was seated. I slowly patted the ground next to me.
“Why don’t you have a seat?”, I asked gently, “It doesn’t have to be near me of course.”
She stood there and by the subtle movements seemed to be debating what to do. She reluctantly moved closer to me and sat down about five feet away from where I was seated.
“Would you care for something to eat or drink? It’s not much, but will hopefully be satisfying enough for you” I asked.
“No thank you, however I appreciate the offer mortal. You need it more than me anyway.”
“Alright. I appreciate your concern though.” I grabbed some bread and cheese from my bag of rations and started eating a little bit.
“You know, for as long as we’ve known each other, we should at least be on a first name basis my dear.”
“You have not earned the ability to even hear my name, and why should I care to recall a name that means nothing to me?” she said harshly.
“My my, such unkind things to say! Especially coming from someone so enchanting as you my dear.”
“I hate you calling me these things mortal! Why do I bother entertaining you with these talks?”
She started to get up from her spot to leave. I jumped from mine and walked towards her a little. My hands in the air to show that I meant now harm.
“My sincerest apologies Guardian. I meant no harm or foul play. Please don’t leave, I promise to behave myself for now on” I pleaded.
She stopped in her tracks. Took a deep breath and turned back around to face me. I couldn’t see her face. She had hidden it by the darkness of her cloak. I wish she didn’t hide it.
I’ve only been able to see it once. Her true face. Not the illusions of other people that she often paraded around to dissuade me from my goal.
It was the most beautiful face I have ever seen. Not even artisans could replicate her natural beauty. However since that day my goal has changed a little. Not only am I here for my original purpose, but to also see her face one more time. Maybe see it with a smile. If Lady Luck is on my side of course.
“What do you want mortal, you’re starting to get to the end of my patience” she said.
“Why don’t we sit down and get to know each other a little?” I gestured back to where she was to have a seat, while I went back to where I was and sat back down.
She sat where she was, which was further away from me before, but that’s only fair I suppose.
“Would you like to go first or would you like me to do that?” I asked politely while picking up the food I was previously eating.
“Why would I want to tell you anything or hear anything about you that I already know?”
“Well, because I am interested in learning more about you and it’s only fair to share about one another. Even if you know all about me. As well as to pass the time with you, since I have nowhere else to be. How about it Guardian? Will you indulge me in this please?”
She sat quietly for a moment. The cavern is still silent. As though every living being in there was waiting on her to answer.
She sighed.
“Fine. I will entertain you on this if you plan on still being here” she said enthusiastically.
My heart beat with pure joy at this. I tried to appear calm on the outside however in hopes not to show my enthusiasm to her. Whether I achieved that or not I’ll probably never know, for I can not see her reaction to me.
“Thank you Guardian”, I mumbled, “Would you like to go first or shall I?”
“Why don’t you go first? Since you seem to be rather chatty at the moment, plus it was your idea after all. Start wherever you think is prudent mortal.”
“Alright. Let’s start at the beginning of my endeavor of finding you and the reason why I’m looking for the Knowledge of Elotl.”
I've finally written up my prologue for everyone to read! It's not an updated one, it's the one I made from the very start. I was hoping to post the updated one and not this one, but life lately has said otherwise. So here it is! I think over all it'll be good more me to post this one and then an updated one later on to show my progress with my writing and how I want to do this story! I'll eventually post stuff here about characters that I mention in parts of my story, but not to much! I still want there to be some surprises and discoveries for everyone to make! Thank you everyone who read this long post. I hope you enjoyed it! Have a wonderful rest of your day my friends! Until next time! Ta ta! <3
